The story behind it

Every family needs a gnome. Ours lives on the mantel from roughly Halloween until the trees come down in January, and he takes the job extremely seriously.

The hat is worked in a spiral with alternating stripes, the beard is a straightforward fringe-and-trim job, and the body is a simple cone stuffed with a little dried rice bag at the bottom so he stands up on his own. No wire, no glue, all yarn.
